When families are no longer able to take care of developmentally disabled, mentally disabled or mentally retarded members of their family, they will often place the mentally challenged person in a home for the mentally handicapped and mentally disabled. Some homes for the mentally handicapped specialize in caring for the severely retarded and the profoundly retarded. Other homes for mentally challenged and handicapped people specialize in caring for those who may not be able to live on their own but who can function fairly well. Some homes for the mentally handicapped are half-way houses where mentally challenged and handicapped people.
